GEO vs SEO: What Generative Engine Optimization Means

What answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization actually mean, how AI search optimization differs from SEO, and what to do about it.

1. What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring a page so an AI system can lift a passage from it and use that passage as the answer it gives the user. Classic search optimization earns a link in a list. Answer engine optimization earns a citation inside a written answer. Those are different outcomes, and they reward different things.

The name people search for varies, and so does the spelling — answer engine optimization is written with a z as often as an s, and both refer to the same thing. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, describes the same work with the emphasis on generated answers instead of retrieved links. Search everywhere optimization is a broader umbrella that folds in social platforms and marketplaces alongside AI answers. The labels differ more than the practice does.

The shift in one sentence

Search engines retrieve pages. Answer engines retrieve passages, then write an answer from them. If your page only makes sense read top to bottom, it has nothing an answer engine can lift.

2. What is generative engine optimization, and is GEO the new SEO?

SEO gets your page ranked, AEO gets a passage from it quoted, and GEO is the same idea as AEO with the emphasis on systems that generate answers rather than list links. The difference between SEO and AEO is not a different set of techniques so much as a different unit of success: a ranked page versus a cited passage.

In practice most of the work overlaps. All three want accurate content, clear structure and a site a crawler can read — the same foundation our SEO and content work is built on. Where they diverge is what happens to the content once it is found.

 SEOAEO / GEO
What gets retrievedThe pageA passage from the page
What success looks likeA ranked linkA citation inside an answer
Where the reader landsOn your siteOften nowhere — they read the answer
What winsAuthority, relevance, linksPassages that stand alone and are checkable
How you measure itRankings, sessions, conversionsCitations and brand mentions in answers

The measurement row is the uncomfortable one. Ranking is countable. Being quoted inside someone's private conversation with an AI assistant largely is not — which is why GEO vs SEO is a genuinely harder comparison to make with numbers than most articles on the subject admit.

3. Is SEO dead in the age of AI?

No. Search engine optimization is not dead — but the assumption that a good ranking automatically produces a visit is no longer safe. That is the real change, and it is worth stating plainly rather than dressed up as a crisis.

Two things are happening at once. AI-generated answers absorb some queries that would previously have produced a click, particularly simple factual ones. At the same time, those answers are built from indexed pages — so the work that makes a page findable is the same work that makes it quotable.

Asking why is SEO dead usually turns up two different worries wearing one label: that rankings will stop producing visits, and that the discipline itself is obsolete. The first is a real and measurable concern. The second is not. Asked plainly — is search engine optimization dead? — no: SEO is not dead, and neither is organic search.

The honest position is narrower than either side of the argument. Nobody claiming to know exactly how much organic traffic AI answers will absorb has that number, because it varies enormously by query type and it is still moving. What is defensible: informational queries are most exposed, commercial and transactional queries much less so, and a page that answers a question well is now competing to be the source of the answer rather than merely a result beneath it.

If your organic traffic is falling, check which queries lost it before concluding anything about AI. Seasonality, a core update, or a competitor's new page explain more declines than answer engines currently do.

4. How do answer engines rank responses?

An answer engine retrieves chunks of text, not whole pages, then assembles an answer from the chunks it judges most useful. Knowing which of your pages are being drawn on at all is a measurement problem before it is a content one.

Understanding that one mechanism explains almost every practical recommendation that follows.

Your paragraph is pulled out of its page, dropped into a model's context alongside competing paragraphs from other sites, and either used or discarded. It arrives without your heading, your navigation or the sentence before it.

Three things follow directly:

  • Self-contained beats well-written. A beautifully argued paragraph that begins "as we saw above" is worthless once extracted.
  • Specific beats confident. A checkable figure with its scope attached is more useful to a system assembling an answer than a superlative.
  • Named entities beat pronouns. "It" and "this approach" do not survive the trip out of context.

None of this is exotic. It is the discipline of writing a paragraph that could be read aloud on its own — which was good practice long before AI search optimization had a name.

5. How to optimize SEO for AI search

The single highest-value change is writing each section so it answers one question completely, without depending on anything around it. Everything else in AI search optimization is downstream of that — and it is the one change that costs nothing but attention.

A worked comparison. This fails when extracted:

"As mentioned above, this usually costs less than the alternative and works better for most of the businesses we see."

Out of context it says nothing. What costs less? Than what? For whom?

This survives:

"A flat monthly retainer usually costs less than a percentage-of-spend arrangement once monthly ad budget passes roughly $20,000, because the percentage keeps rising while the retainer does not."

Lifted out and dropped anywhere, it still answers a real question.

Applied across a page, that means resolving back-references at the start of each section, repeating the subject rather than leaning on the heading, keeping one idea per paragraph, and putting the answer in the first sentence. Using AI for SEO research can speed this up, but the judgement about what a passage claims still has to be yours — a fabricated figure that gets cited is far worse than not being cited.

6. How to rank in AI search results

There is no separate submission process for any of them — they draw on crawled, indexed content, so being findable remains the entry requirement. SEO for ChatGPT is not a different discipline with its own control panel, whatever the tooling market implies.

What differs is emphasis. AI Overviews in Google lean on content already ranking well, so classic search work carries over most directly — which is why AI overviews SEO is less a new discipline than a reason to finish the old one properly. If you are wondering how to rank in AI search, that is most of the answer. Systems that browse live, such as Perplexity, reward pages that are fast, crawlable and unambiguous. Assistants answering from training data favour information that is widely and consistently stated across the web, which rewards clarity and consistency more than novelty.

ChatGPT SEO optimization tools are being marketed heavily at the moment; treat claims of a direct submission channel with suspicion, because none exists. The comparison worth making is not AI search vs Google search as rivals, but which of your own queries each one now answers.

Two practical notes. Keep your organisation, service and product names spelled identically everywhere, including in structured data — answer engines resolve entities, and inconsistency costs you. And consider an llms.txt file: a short Markdown map of your site at the root. Adoption is real but no major engine has committed to honouring it, so treat it as cheap insurance rather than a ranking factor.

How to check where you stand

Ask the questions your customers ask, in the assistants they use, and see who gets cited. It is unscientific and it is still the most direct signal available — there is no reliable public tool that reports whether an AI would cite your page.

7. Will AI replace SEO?

Accuracy, clear structure, a crawlable site and genuine expertise still decide almost everything. The fundamentals did not move; a new retrieval layer was added on top of them.

  • Structured data still matters, and matters more. FAQ and article markup describe your content in a form a machine can parse without guessing.
  • Speed and crawlability are still table stakes. A page a crawler struggles with is a page no answer engine can quote — which makes technical site quality a search issue, not just an engineering one.
  • Real expertise still separates sources. Systems assembling an answer favour text that reads as verifiable, which is difficult to fake at length.
  • Commercial intent still converts. Someone comparing providers still visits sites and makes a judgement, which is why the page they land on decides as much as the ranking did.

Which is why is organic SEO dead is the wrong question. The right one is narrower: which of my queries are being answered without a click, and what am I doing about those specifically?

8. What is SEO vs AEO vs GEO, side by side

Use this to decide where effort goes, rather than treating the three as competing strategies you must choose between. In practice one body of work serves all three, weighted differently by query type.

9. Why is generative engine optimization important?

Pick your ten highest-value pages and make every section on them answer one question completely on its own. That single change does more for AI search optimization than any tool you could buy this year.

  • Run the extraction test. Take any paragraph, read it with nothing around it, and ask whether it still answers something. Rewrite the ones that do not.
  • Put the answer first. Open each section with the direct answer, then qualify it. This wins featured snippets and extraction alike.
  • Attach scope to every number. Who it applies to, and when it was true.
  • Add FAQ and article structured data, and make sure every question in the markup also appears in the visible copy.
  • Name entities consistently across the site and the markup.
  • Check where you already appear by asking the assistants directly, and track what changes — see tracking and analytics.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is structuring a page so an AI system can lift a passage from it and use that passage as the answer it gives the user. Classic search optimization earns a link in a list; answer engine optimization earns a citation inside a written answer.

What is SEO vs AEO vs GEO?

Three names for overlapping work, separated by what counts as success. SEO gets a page ranked so someone clicks it. AEO, answer engine optimization, gets a passage from that page quoted inside an AI-generated answer. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the same idea with the emphasis on systems that write answers rather than list links. The techniques overlap heavily; the measurement does not.

Is GEO just SEO?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the same practice as answer engine optimization with the emphasis on systems that generate answers instead of listing links. The GEO vs SEO comparison comes down to whether you are optimising to be found or to be quoted. The techniques overlap heavily; the measurement does not.

Is organic SEO dead?

No. What has changed is that a good ranking no longer reliably produces a visit, because some queries are now answered without a click. Informational queries are most exposed; commercial and transactional queries much less so. The work that makes a page findable is also the work that makes it quotable.

How to rank in AI search?

There is no separate submission process. AI answers are assembled from crawled, indexed content, so being findable is the entry requirement. Beyond that, write each section so it answers one question completely without depending on surrounding context, attach scope to any figures, use FAQ and article structured data, and name entities consistently.

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is another name for the same practice — optimising so large language models can find, understand and quote your content. Assistants that browse live reward fast, crawlable, unambiguous pages, much as search engines do. Assistants answering from training data favour information stated clearly and consistently across the web. Neither has a control panel you can submit to.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Generative engine optimization sits on top of search engine optimization rather than replacing it — nothing gets quoted in an AI answer before it is crawled and indexed, which is SEO's job. Treat GEO as an additional requirement on the same pages, not a separate programme of work.

Will AI search replace Google?

For some queries, yes — mostly simple factual ones that never needed a visit. For queries where someone is comparing providers or making a decision, they still visit sites. Anyone quoting a precise figure for how much traffic AI answers absorb is guessing, because it varies enormously by query type and is still changing.
